Every now and again you come across a song that kicks you in the head, punches you in the gut, reaches inside your chest and gives your heart a good squeeze. You know, the kind of song you just can’t shake, having to hit repeat, repeat, repeat time and time again. ‘Baby’ by Sad Baxter is one of those ridiculously sticky songs and that’s why we’ve signed them to Dew Process.
If that opening paragraph weren’t enough for you, parallels are being easily drawn between the Nashville rock duo and the likes of Nirvana, Hole, Best Coast and Weezer – so there’s a blueprint for a band that friggin’ rules right there.
Made up of BFFs Deezy Violet (guitar/vocals) & Alex Mojaverian (drums/vocals) Sad Baxter thrive in the space where seemingly at-odds elements converge – sludgy, fuzzed out guitars blended with pop structures, gritty vocals that propel sugary melodies, and some of the most buoyant rock songs this side of the ’90s, containing some truly heartrending words.
The lyrics on So Happy take a purposefully confrontational approach, finding Deezy directly addressing the positive and negative figures in her life, as well as herself. Songs like ‘Baby’ and ‘Sick-Outt’ document the collapse of a toxic relationship and grapple with the desperation of needing to split from that corrosive and controlling presence. Meanwhile ‘Love Yew’ is an open-hearted appreciation for newfound honesty and happiness with someone else.
