If you thought that the finest dark wave pop was solely born out of Britain in the 80s, Wollongong’s DROVES are here to prove otherwise. Cropping up from amongst the surfy vibes of the south coast city just last year, DROVES are already making massive (new) waves – following up their 2018 debut with their latest single ‘Bloodline’, a blend of pulsing drums, glistening analogue synths and beautifully contrasted vocal harmonies. Inspired by the iconic aesthetics of their influences, including New Order and The Cure, the video for ‘Bloodline’ is dark and foreboding, horror film meets cult documentary. Filmed and directed by Teel Studios, the eerie clip incorporates a sprinkling of colour by way of wilted flowers and searing flames, perfectly complementing the song’s anthemic pop hooks. |
